A couple of years ago, I wrote an open letter to the TV and movie vampires of the world. That’s definitely worth a quick read, but if you’re pressed for time, it can be summarized by a simple question:
If blood is so tasty, then why do you leave so much of it on your damn face?
Well it seems that the vampire in the remake of Fright Night (played by Colin Farrell) read my post, because there are several scenes where he stops to lick the extra blood off his face and chin.
Finally — a vampire movie that pays attention to the details! Credit must be given to Marti Noxon (of Buffy fame) who wrote the smart screenplay, as well as director Craig Gillespie (of Lars and the Real Girl fame).
There are a number of really nice touches and surprises in this movie that make it a cut above most remakes out there. If you like your vampires more dark and broody, less sparkle and moody — then you’ll enjoy this film (which is now on DVD/Blu-Ray).
Anyone else pleasantly surprised by this movie?
Great fun popcorn movie. I was glad to see a vampire movie where they didn’t romanticize the vampire, really tired of that.
Also for all those aspiring writer/directors this was a perfect script for a low budget movie, even though the budget is listed at $30 mil, this could have been done for much less, three home interiors including a basement, the expensive studio/home interior in the high rise for the actor, a high school and store interiors, and the rest was pretty much outside. They wrecked three vehicles and the clothes were current and minimal makeup and special effects. It could have been done for so much less with good connections and friends.
Will try to comment more often Trevor.
I loved the Walking Dead post, just started watching it this year, I am also watching a show called Justified that I am really loving. Have you seen it?
You’d be surprised how quickly $30 mill disappears with a professional production. In this day and age, it’s still pretty low budget. But you’re right — it’s the kind of movie that could have been made for less. But then you’re getting rid of a lot of the star performances and “little” touches that made the film great. I’d discuss them, but then that would be giving away some spoilers (which is why I deleted your other comment). 🙂
I’ve heard great things about Justified. I’ve added it to my long list of shows to go through. Currently making my way through the brilliant Rescue Me.
Thanks for the feedback!
I Netlfixed it on your recommendation.
Cool! Let me know what you think.
I vow to return to this very spot and do that.
I will say that as an adolescent, the first one creeped me out when he, uh, “enticed” the girl on the dance floor. Emotions flooded that day, as the filmmakers intended.
Sorry, will try to watch the spoilers for future posts. Didn’t even think about it!
